Fermentation Scientist

Minnetonka, MN

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Fermentation Scientist performs and analyzes fermentations at a variety of scales (e.g., 2 to 20 L). The successful candidate will participate in a range of activities, including:

(1) microbial strain evaluation;

(2) fermentation process development and optimization,

(3) analytical analysis, and

(4) authoring of technical reports and SOPs.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Fermentation Process Development and Strain Evaluation/Improvement

 Planning and execution of fermentation experiments in a team environment (including set-up, operations, sampling, analysis, interpretation, reporting, and presentation)
 Performance of microbial strain evaluations and characterization
 Testing and optimization of new equipment and/or fermentation processes
 Working with team members and stakeholders to develop economically viable, commercially relevant fermentation processes
 Participation in design, start-up, and operational activities of scaled-up fermentation processes within Client or in collaboration with technology partners to facilitate technology transfer from R&D fermentation to pilot and commercial scale processes

Environmental, Health & Safety Leadership

 Maintains a safe work environment for all Client employees and visitors
 Operates safely within Client policies, procedures and governmental regulations and fully participates in and champions Client Environmental, Health Safety (EH&S) Programs
 Accountable for building a strong safety culture and actively pursues it on a daily basis; identifies unsafe behaviors and conditions and intervenes to mitigate incidents


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience Required:
 Formal training (B.S. or equivalent) in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioprocess Engineering, or equivalent
 2 - 4 years post-educational fermentation experience, including set-up, operation, and maintenance of lab and/or pilot-scale bioreactors
 Demonstrated successful production of primary metabolites using metabolically engineered microorganisms, including yeasts and bacteria
 Ability to analyze and interpret fermentation data, as well as identify critical issues, problem-solve, and troubleshoot related processes
 Excellent verbal and written communications skills; effective listening skills; ability to communicate well with scientists and engineers having different academic backgrounds
 Ability to successfully work in a project-driven and team-oriented environment

Education and Experience Preferred:

 B.S./M.S. in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioprocess Engineering, or equivalent

 5+ years fermentation experience at increasing levels of responsibility within an industrial R&D organization

Other preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 Experience with a variety of bench scale fermentation bioreactors (e.g., Sartorius Biostat B, Bplus, C, and Cplus fermentor systems) and working with both small scale (microtiter plates) and larger scale (demonstration scale or manufacturing) fermentation processes
 Demonstrated skills with a variety of fermentation processes, such as batch, fed-batch, and continuous systems
 Experience in setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fermentor control software
 Skills in analytical instrumentation and analysis, including HPLC, GC, and microbiological assays
 Understanding of the basics of experimental design (DOE), statistics, control charts, and the use of manufacturing practices such as Lean and 5S to develop efficient and effective lab processes
 Development of mass and energy balances both for understanding microbe performance and for tracking process control
 Experience in developing and implementing protocols used to test performance of fermentation strains
 Ability to author or co-author SOPs, patent applications, invention disclosures, internal reports, and presentations.
 Capability in performing equipment maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting to ensure proper
operations and maximum up-time.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 This position works in an office environment with interaction in state of the art R&D labs and warehouse
 Regular business hours; some after-hours work will be required on evenings and weekends
 Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift and move up to 55 pounds; will follow Company safety and ergonomic guideless to avoid injury
